Five Spice Powder

The number “5” in ancient China was believed to have special healing powers. Therefore, a powder containing 5 selected spices (ground star anise, Szechwan pepper, cinnamon, cloves and fennel seeds) was used to promote good health. These days Chinese Five Spice usually contains a few more than five ingredients, but provides a distinctive cinnamon and anise aroma and flavour. Add a little spice by using on braised and barbequed meats, roast chicken and pork. Rub onto poultry and marinade with your preferred soy sauce for quick grills or for a barbecue with a difference.

 Five spice powder should be stored in an airtight container.
 Try mixing with salt as an interesting dipping condiment.
